Protecting Rhinos – Preserving Hope

Rhinoceroses, revered for their majestic presence, are under siege from relentless poaching fueled by the illicit trade in their horns. At the Black Rhino Protection Fund, we stand as custodians of these magnificent creatures, driven by a deep sense of duty and unwavering dedication to their survival.

Our journey began amidst a stark reality: rhinos, hunted to the brink of extinction, needed a lifeline. With disciplined resolve and a commitment to action, we emerged as a beacon of hope for Namibia’s endangered wildlife. Guided by the vision of the Namibian Government’s Vision 2030, the Black Rhino Costodianship Program was launched in 1993 by the Namibian Government, pioneering a new era in conservation.

The essence of this program lies in the concept of custodian farms—private lands entrusted with the vital task of providing sanctuary to black rhinos. Through strategic partnerships and meticulous planning, breeding nuclei are relocated to these havens, where landholders willingly embrace the responsibility of safeguarding these iconic animals.

Yet, our journey has not been without challenges. Habitat loss, fueled by the departure of custodians, poses a grave threat to rhino conservation. Despite the absence of financial support, our custodians remain unwavering in their commitment to protect these precious creatures. In response to the escalating poaching crisis, we established the Black Rhino Protection Fund, providing essential resources for anti-poaching efforts on custodian farms.

Our Anti-Poaching Units, comprising highly trained field officers, stand as guardians of Namibia’s black rhinos, defending them against the scourge of illegal hunting. Each officer undergoes fastidious training, equipping them to operate at the highest standards of excellence often in the most unforgiving of circumstances and grueling weather conditions.
